Flying over the North Pole and arriving in Hong Kong.
December 1st, 2006 by stolisano
The airplane flew an amazing route. Can you tell from the picture where we were flying over?
That is right…. THE NORTH POLE!!! WOW.
No, we could not see anything below, since it was dark. So we cannot claim a Santa Clause sighting. We are sorry…
The captain of the plane informed us that we flew over Newfoundland, Labrador, East of the North Pole, Siberia, Mongolia and then across China South to Hong Kong. I was amazed.
It was an exciting moment to step for the first time onto Asian soil. Hong Kong airport is huge, but very easy to get through. We passed immigration, where we had to show our passports and then went with all our suitcases through customs. We hopped on a Express Train that took us to Hong Kong Station, there we jumped into a taxi that took us to the hotel.
All the cars drive on the left side of the street !! The steering wheel is on the right side of the car! Can you guess why? There is a reason for this. Let’s see which class responds first to us with that reason.
On our 10 minute taxi ride we saw so many skyscrapers, neon lights, Christmas trees and decorations, and lots of Doubledecker buses. I will try to get some pictures for you in the next few days.

Good morning! We tried to send a comment over an hour ago, because we know why the cars in Hong Kong are being driven on the opposite side of the road as we drive them in America. It’s because drivers in the United Kingdom (UK) drive on the opposite side of the road from us, and Hong Kong drivers follow the UK’s custom. Why? The UK governed Hong Kong until just a very few years ago.
We’d like to know how your trip has been so far? Have you had a nice long nap before you began to explore Hong Kong?
Have you and Jose already made some new friends in China?
Are you going to ride in one of the doubledecker buses soon?
Have a great weekend, and we will visit with you next week!
Ms. Barnwell’s class
Hong Kong use to be a British Crown Colony…..that is why they drive the way they do. Aren’t the Christmas decorations cool?
What is the weather like there? Please let us know about the weather and your altitude as you travel. Hope you’re having a great time!
Ni Hao!! Hope all is well and that you get some sleep. Is the weather different? Were you able to see the Great Wall from the airplane?
Our answer for the steering wheel is that the wheel needs to be opposite from the side of the road you are driving on.
Talk to you Monday.
Ni Hao!
We were not able to see anything from the airplane on the ground, since it was dark most of the time. We landed at 20.30 Hong Kong time.
The weather temperature when we landed in Hong Kong was similar to the one we left Jacksonville. It was about 21 Degrees C (~ 70 F).
Right now I am looking outside our hotel window and I can see beautiful blue sky.
