History of Hong Kong

Hong Kong has a very unique history, it was under British control for 99 years. On July 1, 1997, China took Hong Kong back. Hong Kong is also known as the Pearl of the Orient, and it is one of the worldʼs greatest cities and financial centers. Hong Kong has a unique mixture of Eastern and Western influences, and its history from a fishing village to a world-class city has made it become widely known to the outside world.

Hong Kong is broken in two parts, divided by Victoria Harbor and located at the South China Sea. Almost 7 million people occupy an area of about 426 square miles . Most people are Chinese and speak Cantonese and English, although Mandarin Chinese is becoming more popular. Hong Kong is one of the most secure cities in the world. We saw many police man patrolling the streets, they seem all very friendly.

Hong Kong is also the home of Kung Fu heroes like the late Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.

It sounds like you have had a busy couple of days! We were all proud of your bravery in letting that man order your food! Gabrielle said that those meat balls were probably NOT beef or pork! What got us thinking was the quote about Hong Kong having 7 million people in an area of 426 square miles. We decided to compare their population with Jacksonville’s! So we called Mr. McKnight, who works at the city of Jax, and he told us that our city (metro area, includes whole county) has 841 square miles! Since we have only 1 million people, we determined that we are not so crowded after all! I will let Mrs. Dawson’s math class figure out how many people per square mile, and she will get back to you on that. So far, the noodle eating competition is going well! Zoe beat Evan in our class! Have fun tomorrow, and we will be looking forward to hearing from you! Love, Mrs. McKnight’s class
