Our Student Council elections were very exciting this year, with many students running for offices, and passionate and motivating speeches being offered by all of those campaigning.

Some of the wonderful projects for the community the student council has participated in this year started in the cold winter months. SJEDS students brought in gently used coats by the pile! These coats were then collected by student council members and brought to a homeless shelter by Mrs. Kim Kelly (thanks again!).
In the same spirit, student council members, along with advisors Mrs. Dawson and Mrs. McKnight, met at Target and purchased oodles of socks for hospital patients at Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital. Those warm, fuzzy socks were given to hospital patients, along with new books purchased by students and parents at the book fair and donated with a note from the giver. “A Very Special Arts” day at the Cummer Museum brought student council members together with exceptional students from all over Duval County to make beautiful art projects and new friendships.
Finally, to cap off the year in grand style, we will present the annual SJEDS talent show in May. This show promises to be an entertaining extravaganza to rival the likes of those seen on the Great White Way! Or at least on “Star Search!” We have singers, dancers, actors, kung foo fighters and talented musicians ready to perform for an adoring audience of SJEDS students, parents and faculty. Their entry fees will allow the student council to fund other worthwhile community and school projects next year.
As you can see, we have been extremely busy this year! If serving your school in this capacity seems like something you would be interested in, start practicing your campaign speech. Who knows? You may be elected next year!
